Getting an IT Job After Graduating From a SoCal Program

You’ve spent several years focused on learning all you can about your planned career field. Now it’s time to demonstrate to employers that you have what it takes to succeed on the job.

Here are several ways to start making yourself visible to companies and recruiters who are looking for great new IT talent in SoCal.

  1. Gather your references. References are key when you’re searching for your first job. These people are on your side; they can vouch for your skills, dedication, and passion. Choose references that will speak highly of your motivation and work ethic, such as former professors or supervisors from previous jobs. Make sure your references agree to be listed in your job search, so they aren’t surprised when a prospective employer calls.
  2. Practice crafting your resume. The best resume is tailored to the job description. It highlights the skills and abilities you have that match what the employer is looking for. Include skills you developed in your college classes, the completion date for your degree, experience on projects you’ve worked on, and updated contact information. Make sure you create a professional-sounding email address. “Your_Name@email.com” will be taken more seriously than “hotstuff@email.com.”
  3. Invest in interview-appropriate clothing. A properly fitting suit in a neutral color like black, grey, or navy will work well for nearly any interview. Make sure you have a dress shirt or blouse to wear with it, as well as appropriate accessories like dress shoes or a tie. If you’re still in school, invest now – you can also wear these clothes to events like final presentations or graduation.
  4. Work with a recruiter. Staffing firms can be a great resource for new graduates. Choose a staffing partner who knows the industry you want to work in and the companies in the location you’d like to work. Talk to your recruiter about the kind of job you’re looking for and the work your degree has prepared you to do. And don’t hesitate to consider temp work – it’s a great way to gain experience, network, and still have time to hunt for your ideal full-time position, all while being paid to do so!
