Don’t Waste Time! How to Fast-Track Your Career

Whether you’ve just graduated from college or you’re looking to make a mid-career switch, one thing is clear: You know where you want to go.  Now that you have a goal in mind, don’t waste time on jobs that don’t suit your goals or projects that don’t build your skills.  Here’s how to put your career on the fast track to success:

Network daily.

Yes, daily – and yes, even if you are currently in a job you love.  The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that 70 to 80 percent of new job opportunities are found through networking.  Even if you’re not looking to switch jobs, networking establishes you as a resource, keeps you “top of mind” for connections looking for information or offering opportunities, and lets you learn more every day – all things that will keep you one step ahead of those who are also vying for a particular job opening or promotion.  Connect daily via LinkedIn, email, texting, or by getting coffee with a professional contact.

Find the projects that move you forward.

If you’re currently employed, ask your supervisor about upcoming projects on which you can lend a hand.  Then, volunteer for those that allow you to strengthen a weak skill, show off your best work, or put you in a position to be noticed by those who can give you more challenging tasks or recommend you for a promotion.

If you’re looking for a job, consider temp work as you search for your next long-term position.  Contract-based projects let you learn new skills, build your resume, “test-drive” employers, and build new professional connections for your network – and get paid to do it.

Work with a recruiter.

Staffing firms specialize in knowing more about the companies, industries, and locations they serve than anyone else in the business.  When you work with a staffing partner, you gain access to this treasure trove of “insider” information – and a connection with the people who can help you seize opportunities for success.
