Medical professionals are constantly exploring innovative ways to improve patient care and support. In 2020, these professionals developed many medical devices that could deliver significant value to patients and healthcare providers in the years to come.
The Galien Foundation recognizes innovations that can improve human health. It named the following medical devices among the most innovative of 2020:
1. MitraClip Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair System
MitraClip is a minimally invasive transcatheter mitral valve repair system. It is designed to eliminate the need for open-heart surgery and may provide a viable treatment option to patients dealing with primary or secondary mitral regurgitation.
2. Venovo Venous Stent System
The Venovo venous stent system can help medical professionals accurately place a stent in a patient. It provides radial force, crush resistance, and flexibility and reduces the risk of stent migration.
3. HeartLogic Heart Failure Diagnostic
HeartLogic is a remote heart failure diagnostic and monitoring device. It leverages psychologic sensors to provide weeks of advance notice of any signs of worsening heart failure.
4. Sentinel Cerebral Protection System
The Sentinel Cerebral Protection System captures and eliminates any debris during a TAVR procedure used to minimize stroke risk and ischemic brain injury. It may also be utilized during other endovascular procedures.
5. Cala Trio
Cala Trio is a personalized therapy device designed to reduce hand tremors. It measures a tremor and gently stimulates the medial and radial nerves that travel to the brain. In doing so, the device disrupts tremor activity in the brain.
6. CustomFlex Artificial Iris
The CustomFlex artificial iris is an injectable device that mimics a patient’s original iris. It may be used for medical and aesthetic reconstruction of the eyes with complete or partial absence of the colored portion of the eye (aniridia).
7. Sapien 3 Ultra Transcatheter Heart Valve System
The Sapien 3 Ultra is a transcatheter heart valve system designed to alleviate aortic stenosis in patients coping with symptomatic heart disease. It may be beneficial to help reduce pain in heart disease patients who do not qualify for open-heart surgery.
8. Inspiris Resilia Aortic Valve
The Inspiris Resilia is a stetted trileaflet valve that consists of bovine pericardial tissue on top of a flexible frame. It uses tissue anti-calcification technology, which helps ensure the valve is made to last.
9. Magtrace and Sentimag Magnetic Localization System
The Magtrace and Sentimag magnetic localization system assists in sentinel lymph node biopsies used to determine if cancer has spread beyond an initial tumor. It consists of an injectable magnetic tracer and magnetic sensing probe, and base unit.
10. CCM Therapy for Heart Failure
The cardiac contractility modulation (CCM) therapy device can be used to treat patients dealing with moderate to severe congestive heart failure (CHF). It delivers electric pulses at specific intervals to help reduce CHF symptoms.
